Interesting. I'm no chemist, but isn't the bearing material in "modern" engines also babbit, just a lot less of it on a shell (except for really recent stuff, where I think the bearing material is plated to the shells)? I know the Model T folks are pretty much sold on detergent oils for their engines, and there's LOTS of babbit there! I do remember being told to break in the engine with non-detergent oil, then to switch to the 'regular' stuff right after break-in. --David D. |
