Sounds like it to mee, especially since you've been overcharging with your generator, A Generators' don't like that! For daytime driving, 5-10 amps is plenty, stay on the low side if you take "longer" drives with few restarts (Starting the car puts the majority of load on the battery)If you drive at night, you need to set it up so it will just charge with lights on. BTW, one of John's voltage regulater "cutouts" will 'automaticlly' limit the output, if you set your generator up correctly--disclaimer: I have no intrest in this product, don't even have one, but I've heard nothing but good about it & John's a square shooter!--
You may have a generator rebuild project ahead of you, check for solder sprayed around the inside of your gen. case at the brush end!
