Thanks for the prompt comments. I appreciate both inputs. I didn't know that shims are sold only in .010" thicknesses, and knowing that Marco has .001" of clearance... that is a lot better than the guidance of "not too tight" I find in my reference books. I'll check the shim thickness one last time, look for some alternative, then snug the locking pins down and see what happens when I get to assembling the car (probably several years down the road!).
I did find that letting loose of the problem for a while did much to improve understanding. After I posted the question I realized that the only things that determine the clearance of the thrust bearing from the king pin head are the thickness of the bearing itself and the the positioning of the locking notch on the king pin. And since the shims go on after the spindle assembly is already on the axle, they have no effect on how difficult the initial assembly is. Oh well... late learning is better than no learning.
