Front End Follies

Hi Folks,

Well it's a crisp autumnal New England day here in Southern Connecticut and soon we'll be enjoying the seasonal foliage in our Model A's and bringing home a rumble seat full ofpumpkins.Almost time to mount the manifold heater!

As you know at this time of year a young mechanics fancy turns to the planning of the "Winter Project"This winter it's a complete front end rebuild.Springs, perches, king pins, steering ball replacement...

While sighting down the drivers side of the car from the front end last night I noticed that my drag link seems to have a very pronounced inward bow in it.I'm assuming that the front end was so stiff from lack of lubrication at one time that the drag link may have bent before the steering mechanism gave.Or, perhaps this bow is designed into drag link but I doubt it!

Would any of you folks take a stab at any or all of the following questions?I'd appreciate it.

a)Should the drag link be perfectly straight?

b)If so should it be straightened cold on a press?

c)What's a fair price to pay for replacement spring perches?

d)Have any of you tried the EZ steering teflon cup/spring replacements for the drag link and tie rod?Are they worth the money?

Thank you all for your help and suggestions.I really appreciate it.See you down on the pumpkin farm!

Regards,

Kevin Daly
