Differential Blues

My apologies if this message replicates.I need the help of the collective on this one guys.
How do you match up the two halves of the differential casing?The rear end that I am building came in boxes dissasembled.The books tell you to "mark the casing halves" before disassembly.I'm speaking of the mechanism that holds the spider gears, axles and ring gear.These parts will fit together in at least three positions.Does it matter or is there a way to find out?
