Dave,
I hadn't thought it through that well, but it certainly makes sense that they would have done the stampings before the car was painted. Thanks for the follow up information.

: Hi Bobby,
: Yes, I recall that your car has a firewall date. Unusual?
: The article I was referring to was in 'The Model "A" Ford' by DeAngelis, Francis and Henry. It says in part "During the later part of 1928 and continuing into 1929, the engine side of the firewall, on the drivers side and directly above the split, was stamped with a date. This date denotes when the body assembly was completed. The installation of that body on the chassis could have occurred two weeks to two months after that date, depending on the assembly plant location". I think it is rare that other than 1928 and 1929 cars had the firewall date stamped, however it probably was stamped when the body was completed and at least in primer (white). I wouldn't think they would stamped the body after it had been painted. The same is probably true with the assembly plant numbers.

: : I was not aware of that. Can I assume that pertains to 28-29's which typically had the date on the firewall?I guess there is no reason why it would have been done differently in '31 though...
