Mark,
Although you did fix the ends of that lil' wire, it could be broken in the middle! (under the insulation, where you won't notice it) Other problems, as noted, could be condensor, and the rare one, coil that fails when it warms up.
Oh, check the points too for loose rubbing block, or the tension spring not in place.
