: My '31 Victoria is in need of a new muffler.Find them from $47.00 to $266.50 in various catalogs. This will be for a "driver" and want a muffler that has "A SOUND".Would appreciate any experiences and recommendations.

Ron,

To my knowledge there are three basic mufflers available. The "inexpensive" one (to be nice) works but requires some heated bending to fit properly and sometimes has a poor mounting flange that can cause much grief. It doesn't sound correct (and loud) because the cheap baffling (most wouldn't notice the difference). The "Aries" muffler from Redwood City, CA., has undergone some changes since it's inception making it slightly less authentic than it was initially, but still good fit, quality, and proper baffling and sound. The third is available in a couple of versions butthe ones I've seen had a problem with implementing the original design resulting in a poor fit and a main canister seam that would split open if you were so unfortunate as to encounter a backfire through the exaust.
