Tom-
Before pulling the tranny out, check that the shift forks are sliding the second gear fully into position - if the forks are worn, the gear may not be fully engaging the cluster gear. Also check that the dedent springs in the shift tower are strong enough to hold the lever in place at least a little. The shift forks do not hold the gear in position against strong forces, and if the fit of the sliding gear on the rear mainshaft is sloppy, or if the gear teeth are very worn, the tranny willl jump out of second no matter how strong the dedent springs are and even if the gear is fully engaged. If the forks are worn, you can disassemble the tranny tower and switch the levers around (they are identical) or weld up the worn parts and machine back to shape.Beware of reproduction gears - the fit of the second slider gear has to be very tight on the shaft - just enough to allow sliding but no "slop".
Good luck

: While driving up an incline in 2nd gear, my 1930 Model A 4 door sedan, slips into neutral. I can prevent this by holding the gear shift lever, but I'm afraid I may have some serious problems developing. Can anyone offer any advice?
: Thanks!
