: An old timer told me that the best way was to use a small ball peen hammer, and gently tap till the numbers are gone.That way you can keep the A and the stars.
I tried this last nite, with poor results.So I took a dull pr*ck punch, and obliterated the numbers with that, leaving a rough finish.I then used the small ball peen hammer to flatten the roughness, and the results were great.
Fileing the number boss would not have worked here, since it was already ground down years ago when the engine was rebuilt.
Now I have a clean spot to stamp the frame number.
