sorry jim,

i don't have the answer to your question, but your
problem brings back a fond memory of when i
first got my model a.

of course i knew nothing about the car other
than the fact that it was old and run down, but i
had managed to get it running and took it
for a spin around the block.

i had almost made it around the block when
all of a sudden there was a shower of sparks
and then a huge backfire.i thought the
car was going to explode it was so violent.

anyway, the engine died and i coasted to a halt
right in front of a neighbor's driveway.they
had a huge gathering of people outside
and were obviously getting ready to
go somewhere.you should have seen
the look on their faces --- everybody
was staring at me and couldn't believe
the fact that an ancient car had just
died on their doorstep.

i finally figured out that the brake
rod had shorted across the battery
terminals and caused the spark shower,
but i still have no idea why there
was such a huge backfire at that moment.

good luck on your problem,
