George,

First of all, welcome to the hobby!

I am neither a mechanic nor a expert on Model "A's" but I have an active touring Tudor.

A stock generator with a regular repro cutout is installed on my car.I am not using a regulator but everyone I know who has one loves it.

My distributor has the modern upper plate and condenser but the rest is stock. The modern condenser is better protected from the exhaust heat.

I am pretty new to the hobby but I have driven my car 8,000 miles since I restored it in 1996.I have never had one ounce of trouble with my electrical system. No dead battery or anything.I even drive at night.

Some people like to install halogen bulbs in their headlights. In this case an alternator is needed. However, I don't think halogen bulbs are necessary if your headlight reflectors are properlymaintained.I also don't like the looks of the alternators. They just don't fit in.

The only time my system is strained is when I have the headlights on and I blow the horn. This really isn't a problem.

I am STILL tinkering with the carburetor, though.I'm not quite satisfied in that department. Our friends here on the Board have been helping me out.

Good luck!
