George,

It's probably not a bad idea.I've heard many good things from guys that went that direction.Probably more effective than the alternator itself is the voltage regulator aspect that eliminates the need to mess with charging rates, etc.For someone that is new to the cars or just wants to get in and go without dealing with the how and why of the original car, it is a good alterative.

I've seen a conversion for the original distributor that elimintes the points (electronic ignition?) that works around all the wear problems and poor reproduction part problems inherant with rebuilding the original distributor.Since the original distributor is RARELY restored properly, it's probably a good idea.

The bottom line is that both of these SHOULD operate at or near peak with little knowledge or intervention while the original design will require a thorough understanding and periodic maintenance to operate at peak.

There are far more shortcomings in the typical restored version of the Model A than there was in the original car. There are a few modernizations that slightly reduce maintenance and many that side step improper restoration. It's most important that you do whatever will provide the most enjoyment from your Model A!
