John,

This like treading water.Lots of movement going nowhere.Pull the pan, least of all it will cost you is a new gasket. Inside the oil pan is another pan which has an oil reservoir for the rod dippers to catch oil and sling.Take this pan out and clean it real good and put back in the oil pan. While the oil pan is off check all the rods for looseness also the main crank if you can.If everything is ok put the oil pan assembly back on the motor.Be carefull with the rear seal!I am not a distributer nor a salesman but I am really sold on Durolube. It appears to have an affinity for babbit and will be absorbed by the babbit. When you pour oil down the distributor hole use the Durolube and follow with regular oil.I don't use high detergent oil on old engines. The oil laying in the inner pan will help lube the rods and mains quickly. You can put the rest of the oil in the normal place.Hand crank the engine with spark plugs out and later with the starter.I sometimes top the pistons with thin oil.You should notice the engine freeing up.When that occurs its time to place the rest of the parts on and start the engine.
