: I have sandblasted the frame and front and rear end on my '30 driver and need some advice on the type of paint to use. I know that black is the color, but I'm not sure if I want gloss or semigloss.

: Also, my research shows that the types of paint commonly used vary greatly from the rustoleum hardware store types to the high tech/high priced auto paints that can kill you if you don't have fresh air breathing systems.

: Does anyone have experience with some middle ground type of paint that will hold up reasonably well and allow me to spray with my old fashioned mask type respirator?

: I'm not looking for a half way job, but my main concern is rust protection and reasonable cosmetic appeal.

: Thanks for any advice, Michael D

Hi Mike..

Try and find some zinc chromate primer for your frame and running gear.It has excellent rust inhibiting properties.

If the parts have a "rust blush" since you had them blasted, you will have to remove that prior to priming with sandpaper or muriatic acid (Metal Etch at the auto paint stores) and then clean the residue with enamel reducer.

Then spray the parts with a good acrylic black enamel (I used Ditzler) and top coat with an acrylic clear coat. That will give you a nice, glossy finish without the "dazzle" look that the urethanes give you.
