Scott,
Yes that is correct.
But the method depends on the condition of the paint on the car.
If the car is in primer or is going to be repainted then you can take the hinges apart and bang on them with a hammer until the gap is correct.
If you do not want to mess up a paint job then then I would use a piece of soft wood or wrap the screwdriver in rubber.
If the gap is too wide then you have to remove the hinge and press it together with a vise, again use wood or rubber to prevent messing up paint.
