I had to give the condensed version this morning as I was late for an appointment (you can tell by the typos)! The reference I gave was a starting point based on the position the levers were in when the car left the factory. The levers never actually reach the 12 o'clock position when applying the brakes.Starting at the point I descibed will reduce the trial and error necessary.Besides the obvious loss of leverage if the levers pull rearward to much, the brake rods may require shortening!

The brake floaters are an effective quick fix if you are unable to get the shoes centered properly (not uncommon). There will be a slight loss of leverage relative to the original wedge, but if you can't get the shoes within .020" or .030" of center you may be better off using the floaters. The other side effect of any of the floating schemes is an occasional loud brake chatter which is probably more embarrasing than uncomfortable.
