: Can anyone tell me if a steering shaft can be repaired. the shaft is badly gouged on both sides of the worm gear, the metal wil have to be replaced or a new shaft. Are there any shafts available?

: Thanks

I've been down that road. It is possible to replace the worm. It is pressed on the shaft and there is a keyway in the shaft holding it in position. It's about a 12 ton press fit! Look around for a new worm gear. There are a few good ones left. Watch out for pretty foreign gears. They may look pretty but they are soft..... Look for one that has a good looking worm, don't worry about the color. When they are heat treated properly they have a straw color.
Press of the old worm and then press on the new.
Good luck
Brian
