Brian,

How very British of you. I assume that you are talking about what we here in the US call the hood. There are four panels that make up the hood and they are connected with three hinges (rods). I also assume that you are talking about the top hinge. If my assumptions are not right then no need to read the rest of this message.
The hinge at the top of the hood is a rod (sometimes a hollow rod) that joins the left and the right sides of the hood. The rod may be broken or worn out at the ends, if so you should replace it. If it is the hollow type you can fix it by cutting it off then insert a solid metal rod into the tube. The rod should be several inches long and fit tightly in the tube. Then you can put a piece of metal tubing on the end to replace the part that you cut off. You might want to let the solid rod stick out a little longer than the new piece of metal tubing so you can peen (mushroom, hit with a hammer) it over to keep the new tubing in place.
You should also check the brackets that the hinge rod fit into. If they are worn you should fix or replace them. The rod should go a full 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) into each bracket. This can be adjusted with the radiator support rods. Unfortunately adjusting the radiator support rods can cause the hood to become misaligned. Well that is enough, or too much information. Good luck.

Bob
