: I am going to be replacing the spark plugs on my 31 pick-up.On the existing plugs, the two center ones don't have the metal ring between the block & the plug. The two outside ones do. I put rings on the center plugs & it ran real rough. Is it just a matter of re-gaping the points, or is this a sign of something else in the cylinder? Thanks, Tom
Tom...those rings are just a gas seal...nothing else..the grounding contact is made in the threads of the plug...the plug also cools through the threads...I can't see that raising or lowering the plug in the A chamber would make it run rough...I would first run a compression test...then check your air gap...then check your point opening in the distributor...on each lobe...so you will checking the gap four times...I would check for distributor shaft side play and also check your cap for air gap and cracks...or carbon tracking...
You can tell the heat range of your plugs...and the mixture by the color of the plugs as you take them out...if you had lower compression they would be darker or sooty...maybe even oil coated...I assume you are using Champion 3X plugs...check them for cracks and fuel saturation...you might even try a couple of new plugs to eliminate the plugs from the tune-up...good luck..Joel
