Don't- under any circumstances -climb under a car with a "sole source" of lift.

Always have more than one jack or point of support under the car such that if one should fail, another will pick up the load.This rule even applies with an overhead hoist.

"Jackstands" are available very cheaply, usually less than $10 per pair.While I am not very impressed with the cheap storebought ones generally, they do work on a level concrete floor.Even with two of these, I leave the jack in place "just in case".
(This methodology has saved me once certainly from a rescue by the EMT's and a trip to the hospital when the #@%&*! sissor jack slipped.)

Also, if you use concrete block, try to place them such that the holes show on the top surface.They are stongest that way (which is why they are used in this orientation to to build buildings in real life)
