Paul,

SInce you get backfire through the carburator and the starter is 'thrown out' the engine is obviously fireing at the wrong time.Since the timing is correct something else must be causing the spark at the wrong time.Did you take out all of the plugs and check that each one fires at the correct time, not just number 1.

My first guess would be that there is an electrical short somewhere in the distributor.I have seen cracked distributor caps or bodies that allow the spark to go to the wrong plug.Check for small cracks in the cap and body.

Also make sure that there is not something inside the distributor that is shorting out while the engine is turning.Like a screw head that might touch when the points open or a wire the mightmove when the shaft turns.
