Engine wear is much higher when the overall temperature is less that 140 deg. It's a good idea, then, to get the water temp up as fast as possible and hold it above 140 at all times. A 160 degree unit will do that nicely.

Caviat - If there's a lot of junk floating around in your cooling system, the bypass hole in the thermostat may plug.Depending on where you get your 'stat the bypass should be 1/8" - 3/16" in diameter. There must be flow past the 'stat at lower temperatures so the hot water can get there to open it up.

"A"s didn't have a lot of things that were found to be quite valuable later - Oil filters - Air filters - Crankcase ventilation - counterweights. If you're a parade type or a show type, then nothing is needed since the car sits in the garage all the time.

If you put 10-14K on the car every year, then some improvements will reduce the maintenance pain - unless you really enjoy changing the oil every couple of weeks.
