Ok, I'll wade into this.An approach that I have used successfully to make waterpumps work is to rebuild with mostly standard parts (use a stainless shaft) but add a collar to the front of the pump to strictly limit the play of the shaft front to back.If you are using a head that is in reasonable condition, this will prevent the impeller from floating back into the cast portion of the head and allow the device to do it's job.I've been running a couple of these guys for quite some time and have had great success with the "collar" approach.
My opinion is Spend the $3 for a collar and don't build up a pile of angst over "end-play" in the shaft.
