I, too, prefer alternators, but I had a great chat with the
guy at Fun Projects in Downers Grove, IL, who makes one of
these voltage regulators, and he convinced me that he can
make a generator capable of living a long and happy life with
his product, and we have been installing them for some time
now - no complaints. The instructions do say to set the
rate at no more than 15 amps. Did you get a true voltage
regulator or just a diode-converted cutout? Remember, that's
not a voltage regulator at all, but just a cute way of doing
away with the points in the cutout. The thing should've cost
about $50.00. If it was $20 or so, it's just a diode cutout
and it won't protect your gen. from anything that the old
cutout wouldn't have.
