The key to generator safety is not to exceed the maximum capability of the generator. In the case of an "A" unit, you can get to 20 amps for SHORT periods, but constant (10-15 minutes in hot weather)operation above 12-13 amps causes excessive heat build-up in the armature which will "throw solder" out of the commutator segments releasing the wires which then commit suicide against the field pole pieces. The evidence of this is a silver band of solder around the inside of the generator housing and on the cover band.

Bottom line - if your Ammeter stays above 12 amps a lot with the regulator, you could be in danger of cooking the generator, and the operation of the regulator is suspect.
