Sounds like a jury rig.I assume the first condenser was the original one that was mounted low in the distributer housing.
Maybe they left it in to stabilize the contact plate for the conduit plunger. Not a good idea, though.too much capacity would reduce the available spark.
I'm sure you'll be happier without it.
