Single thickness fan

I never have gotten a definitive answer on this one yet, but a while back I got a two-bladed fan which looks just like a normal "A" fan, but is not laminated out to the blade tips like normal fans.The doubling ends about 2" out from the hub. It's much lighter than a normal fan.
I understand that this is a late modification to address the blade-chucking problems, but I don't know whether it was successful or not.
Does anybody know if the unlaminated fan is more reliable than the normal unit??Did Ford have a better idea??
