: checking the clearance on the rear main bearing with plastigage, I have .0015 which I think is good, however this clearance is with no shims installed, is this a problem or will it work ok with out the shims, or are they needed to form a oil seal.

: thank you for any help on this question.

G'Day jim,
The optimum main bearing clearance is 0.001" but you shouldn't have any problem with the extra 0.0005". If you're worried about it being excessive, you could remove a LITTLE material from the cap face where it mates to the block by rubbing on 220 or 300 grit sandpaper/emery cloth on top of a surface plate or sheet of plate glass. The bearing may then have to be blued & scraped to remove any ovality if too much material is removed. Not having the shims is sometimes a blessing, as if they're not pushed up against the journal on assembly or if they're damaged in any way, they can allow oil to seep past & out of the rear main.
