I'd cut a piece of stiff wire (or stiff something else) 45" long, and stick it down the hole.with the end of the wire flush with the end of the steering shaft at the wheel end, if there's about 3/4 inch projecting out the bottom, then you need the short rod. if it doesn't, or just barely goes through you need the long one.
