Removing the Light Switch Rod

I have a 1929 standard coupe. My steering wheel has several cracks and gouges so I was going to remove it and restore it.The first step was to remove the light switch rod.As I was pulling it out, I hit the back corner of the interior of the coupe yet the end of the rod was not in site yet.I removed the steering column upper support bracket so that the steering column could hang a little lower but I still can not get out the switch rod.

Has anyone got any tricks out there for removing the switch rod from a closed coupe?

I even thought about pulling the steering column over toward the center of the car and removing the rear window to get it out, but it seems extreeme and I thought I'd ask here first. However, I don't think I can put the column over that far and I really don't want to remove a perfectly good window.

I never thought 45 3/4 inches was so long before today.
