: During November, I posted a message describing what happened while driving my 1930 Std. Coupe. Upon disassembling the rear-end, my fears became reality. The pinion ring lost a tooth and wedged it between itself and the differential housing, but not before it took lots of metal off of the castle nut and some of the pinion gear. Yuk. How much of this stuff is available, or should I try to find a complete/working rear-end? Help!

Over the years I have bought a number of rearends and my advice is to check it out very carefully. The bottom line is that it is really "Buyer Beware" Water in the gear case, heavy rust and stuck parts are danger signs. All that said I have managed to buy a few real good units for rebuilding and have accumulated lots of good spare parts.
The first rearend I rebuilt was the result of broken teeth on the ring and pinion gears. The pinoin was damaged so I got another drive shaft, complete with pinion and bearings, and a non-matching ring gear.I used that rearend for 11 years and it never did howel or make strange noises. There are some good articles on reabuilding rearends in the "How to Restore Your Model A" books and in the Restorer magazine.
