Fred,

Dum dum is a non-hardening strip caulking still used today. It can be streched, shaped or conformed to almost any surface. It should be available at most automotive glass shops. It's also available at most automotive paint stores, but you will have to buy more than you need. Most of what I have seen in recent years is 1/4" round.

The application you describe was a practice in 1928-29, and I believe was dicontinued with the addition of a special moulded weatherstrip in 1930. The windshield hinge weatherstrip is available from most of our parts suppliers.

If you noted the use of friction tape at the hinge, it's a good reminder that Ford used friction tape at most metal-to-metal joints and some wood-to-metal joints in the body where no other anti-squeek or weatherstrip was used.

: Reading A Service Bulletins on the matter of windshield header leaks I noticed they referred to a material as a strip of dum dum approximately 1/8"thick by 7/16" wide. I'm a real novice can someone tell me what is dum dum ? Can you purchase it today or is there something close to it on the market? Thanks for the dum dum info in advance. Novice of the North.
