Finding a good used rear end would be GOOD, if you knew it was GOOD. But what if it wasn't GOOD???? You wouldn't know unless you disassembled and did a complete inspection and this is usually not practical, especially at swap meets. A complete inspection of yours should reveal if in fact it is rebuildable and if so bearings, seals, and ring & pinion fix you up. If the spider gears and the carrier appear to be uninjured, and probably this is the case, and the axles suffered no damage then about $400 max gets you up and running with a rear end in which you have some confidence. If you are a nut like me you would end up buying a used rear end at a swap meet and before you knew it you would be rebuilding it "just to be sure". If the hard parts are OK you can rebuild just as easily and with confidence. When you do rebuild consider mixing a little STP with the 600W for rear end lubricant. Experience with a fleet of industrial equipment tells me it is good stuff. I used to buy it by the case.

OR you can buy a used at the swap meet and stick 'er in and off you go adventuring... and I do mean adventuring because you will have one ear on the engine and one on the rear end. Ever notice how the noises get louder, more frequent and unidentifiable as the darkness and distance from assistance increases. What the hell, buy a used rear end and a good pair of walking shoes and go for it.... Like Amelia Earhart and the infamous trailing radio antenna... who needs it?!

: During November, I posted a message describing what happened while driving my 1930 Std. Coupe. Upon disassembling the rear-end, my fears became reality. The pinion ring lost a tooth and wedged it between itself and the differential housing, but not before it took lots of metal off of the castle nut and some of the pinion gear. Yuk. How much of this stuff is available, or should I try to find a complete/working rear-end? Help!
