Cutting headliner for dome light

I just installed a LeBarron-Bonney headliner in my 30 Deluxe Coupe. It went in OK I guess, and it is even smooth and snug. If I tap it with the back of a pencil, it resonates a bit like a deep drum. Now, to install the dome light. I was planning to cut radial cuts in the headliner and tack and cement the resulting flaps around the inside rim of the wood cutout for the dome light.

Now I'm wondering if the tension in the headliner fabric might cause it to unravel at these cuts and essentially ruin it.I'd hate to ruin this nice tight headliner. Is this even the recommended method? Advice appreciated.

Paul
