Check out www.classicar.com for a list of museums in both areas (times, phone numbers, addresses, etc.)
If you have time in the SF area, check out the Blackhawk Collection in Dublin (about 30 miles east near Hwy 580 and 680.
In the LA area, there are LOTS, but one of the nicest private collections open to the public is called San Sylmar, the former Merle Norman / JP Nettercut collection in Sylmar, about 30 miles north of Downtown LA in the San Fernando Valley.My dad and I were there early December and they have a Gorgeous display of fine automobiles, music instruments (organs, boxes), hood ornaments, in a palacial setting designed just for the collection.You must have reservations in advance so call them first.
