I would think that running rich would make the engine run cooler due to the extra gas getting in, and freshly rebulit engines will run hotter till they wear in some more.

I've had the same problem till I adjusted the float level in the carb. I tried smaller jets, even custom sized ones and still pretty rich. Then I started having a problem with fuel leaking out and installed a "Grose" jet to replace my stock one. I found that the engine ran leaner and had to make a small adjustment to raise the float level richer. I runs better now and I can turn the dashpot closed and choke the engine.

Another thing to check is the timing. If it is too retarded an A or even modern engine will run hotter.
