Dick,
This topic has been hashed out here many times in the past. But I think it is useful to bring these up again for people who were not here when they were first discussed.We might also get some fresh ideas.
My view is that you use a good quality multigrade oil and change it often.If you drive your car thousands of miles every year then you should install an oil filter, one that filters all of the oil. The only exception is if you have a car that has been using non-detergent oil for many years.In this case switching to a detergent oil without using an oil filter might cause all of the gunk at the bottom of the pan to get into the oil and cause problems (you could flush the engine,take off the pan and clean it before using the detergent oil).
