: What kind of engine oil should be used in Model A's
: thanks for any advice.

Hi Dick..

There has been many articles and discussions over the years about non-detergent versus detergent motor oils, and the abiguous (at best) results differ depending on who's talking or who's writing the article.

Not being a Lubrication Engineer, I will give you my opinions.

If I had an engine with a lot of miles on it that uses non-detergent oils, I would continue to use it, but definitely add an oil filter.

I had my engine rebuilt, and I use Quaker State 10 W 30 detergent oil with an API SH rating with an oil filter.(Think there might even be an SI rating by now).

I don't recall ever hearing or reading proof that detergent oils are bad for the babbit bearing material in the Model A engine.

Think you might have opened up the can!
