Bill,

I've been biting my tongue (or fingers!) regarding this issue. The truth is that most A's are running with a worn or poorly reground camshaft. I'm still waiting for someone to show me a reground cam that is even close to the original grind. Thats a power issue. The other main problem is after major engine work the 60+ pound flywheel is rarely within the .005" limit on concentricity or wobble. Added to other losses in balance and the reduction in power the "comfort zone" is somewhat slower than a factory Model A.

I was fortunate enough to enjoy my 1929 Roadster for 48,000 miles between 1975-81. The first 10,000 miles at 55-60 mph. I then installed 3.54/1 ring & pinion and drove the rest at 60-65 mph. The only spare part I ever carried was a generator cutout that I gave to someone else 500 miles from home on year six.

I do strongly recommend that everyone find the ideal "comfort zone" that fits them and their 'A'.

: If 40/45 is the magic speed why do a lot of period advertisments boast of 55 to 60mph? A friend of mine has a 30 coupe with 40,000 plus miles of 50 to 55 on it and it runs great,Its a babbit motor!
