: I've reinstalled the rear springs, and all went well, except the rear U bolts. If I tighten all four castle nuts and center nut this will draw the springs up tight under the rear crossmember but the catle nuts will be over an inch above the cotter pin holes. If I back of the center nut and four U bolt nuts down to the cotter pin hole it raises the rear of the frame, alas it is about 25-3/4" from the ground. Which is correct, bolt tight or back off castle nuts? Is it wise to install the spring covers now that it is easily exposed? How much foot lbs to the center bolt is safe? I recieved my A with a brocken rear crossmember that I replaced and I don't want to reinstall the U-bolts incorrectly. Thanks again for your advice from "The Model A Novice of the North" Regards.

Don't put the spring cover on until after the spring and rear axle are installed on the car. Its not a hard job to do, and if you put the covers on first you may get them caught or pinched and interfere with getting the spring fully seated in the crossmember. Some restorers cut a small "inspection" hole in the body so they can verify that the square bolt head is fully seated in the hole in the crossmember.
Good luck
