The problem seems to be that the bearing in the inner cover and the shaft O.D. both wear, allowing the wingshaft to wobble, and contact the inner bores, wearing heavily on the wingshaft hub/fixed dam surfaces, and to a lesser degree on the tips on the wings.

My recollection is that with the adjusting needle screwed shut, then it should take 3 minutes for the shock to move through its arc with 20-25 foot pounds applied to the shaft in the high resistance direction.This says that the internal clearances should be pretty small.Clearances of 0.03 - 0.06" in core units aren't too rare, and couldn't possible provide that type of performance.
