In addition to Mike's comments, I've become aware that the "wireless" breaker plates aren't too reliable either.Definitly to be avoided like the plague.

The most important feature to look for is that the distributer cam has highly polished cam surfaces.ANY roughness or pitting will grind down the rubbing block on the points RAPIDLY whether they're "Modern" or original.

Another prime failure cause for the distributer is the wire that connects the upper and lower plates together. It is short (in stock form)and not terribly flexible, it's a constant worry spot.

The best expedient is to install a new wire made out of "Test Probe" wire (available at Radio Shack). This is heavy insulation, and 'lotta strands for high flexibility. Cut it so it goes completely around the inside of the body once before connecting to the upper plate.

I also prefer to use the Long distributer shaft instead of the two-piece variety.I can't see that the extra joint in the short ones does anything but de-stabilize your timing.

Seems to me that carrying an extra:
Capacitor
Point set
connecting wire
would take care of anything you'd face on the road rather than carrying and extra distributer.
