Ted,

I really need more ifo to answer your question correctly.But lack of information is not going to stop me.First is the battery connected with positive ground ?You could have a short in the ammeter or the cable that goes from the ignition switch to the distributor. Since you obviously have the dash panel off disconnect the wire that connects to the side of the ignition switch.Check the dash to see if it is still 'hot' if it is not you most likely have a short in the ignition cable.To test the ammeter disconnect both wires going to it and see if the dash is still 'hot'. If it is not hot there is a short in the ammeter.Note check the ignition cable with the ammeter connected.I would guess that it is the ignition cable since they are prone to shorting out.They can be repaired.Let us know and we can help you get through this.
