It would depend upon the techniques and materials that your rebuilder used. Start by asking him. The top grade babbitts available today should require little or no maintenence. I once had occasion to tear down an engine my machinist had re- built (never, ever waste your time and money on a cracked block) with 15,000 plus miles on it. The bearings showed no wear at all - looked just like the day they were installed. On the other hand, I heard of some folks who had somehow gotten the idea that they could melt down WHEEL WEIGHTS and babbit their engines with the resulting lead compound. They were making it about 500 miles between jobs. Babbitt type does matter. |
