Dean,

The cutout prevents the battery from draining into the generator.When the engine rpm is low the generator does produces less vlotage than the battery. In this case the battery would try to 'charge' the generator.To prevent this the cutout removes the generator from the charging circuit if it's voltage is below a preset value.The cutout is an electromechanical device.Basically it is an electromagnet that closes a relay when a certain voltage is reached.A diode is an electronic device (no moving parts) which allows current to flow in only one direction.If the manufacturing quality is the same the diode should be more reliable than the mechanical cutout.
