: Trying to get my newly restored 30 Coupe on the road is getting to be quite a challenge..

: I am using a B carburetor with a Grose float valve, and the carb is sqeaky clean as is the fuel system evidenced by a clear filter bowl. Also using a filter attached to the top of the shutoff valve.

: Timing appears to be correct, and the timing gear cover is the B cover as evidenced by the oval shaped boss aroung the timing pin hole. The condersor is new. Now for the main question.

: The car runs very rich even with the dash control almost shut off.The idle screw is 1 3/4 turns open.Ron from Standard Auto Parts (Old Ernie Hemmings store in Peoria, IL) says that the intake manifold may not be flat causing an air leak, and suggests that the manifold be removed and planed flat.

: Would appreciate any suggestions..

G'Day Larry,
After reading all the words of wisdom (& almost blind from the science), I'd like to add my two cents worth. I know you say you've fitted a new condensor, but the symptoms you describe all point to a weak spark, causing incomplete combustion (hence the richness). The comment which really makes me think this could be your problem is the backfiring whilst driving, so try looking at the sparks department again, such as carbon around or crack in the coil tower.
P.S. I've fitted more than one faulty brand new condensor.
