I agree with Bob's reply & feel you shouldn't really push 12 volts into a 6 volt system, so disconnecting the starter cable is a good idea. The maximum charge voltage for a 6 volt battery should not go above +/- 7.2volts over an extended period, otherwise you'll risk damaging the lead plates inside the battery which would then make it perfect for making fishing sinkers out of or using as an anchor.
My question is why did the battery go flat in the first place & is it likely to be a recurring problem?, in which case a whole new bunch of answers will be required.
