1929 Tudor Door Latch Problem

I am restoring a 1929 Tudor Sedan. The catch for the driver's side door post (the adjustable piece that is held in place with two bolts) has been removed, and a home-made replacement welded in. The body is off of the chassis, so I can see that the little box that holds the two nuts for the bolts is still there, but has the home-made catch welded to it. How can I fix this problem?
