: To add to what Paul said about ordering the packing...there are two kinds of waterpump packing.One is the rope kind that Paul mentioned, and the other is the lead ring packing which looks like a rubber washer that you would put in a garden hose...only it is made of lead/graphite.

: This kind of packing is not supposed to score the shaft as much as the rope packing.I'd be interested in other A'ers comments on this...as I have wondered which works better.

I am new at this, but I spoke to a gentleman who has years of experience with both Model A and Model T cars.He didn't recommend the lead type washers because his experience was that the lead type scored the shaft.
